Ahmedabad — A city of Paradoxes

Mukul Patel and Manu Luksch are London based artistes working with various mediums. When Mukul approached us with this book designed by internationally acclaimed designer Marion Mayr, we were trilled. However, when receiving the Indesign artwork we realized the challenges it posed:

The size was such that maximum printable sheet size of 1010mm x 728 mm was utilized. The TAC (total area coverage or total ink) was very high on most of the pages. This would have caused the 130 GSM paper to get soaked and cause fan-out in the tail areas. The type size and type thickness is so small that it would have posed registration problems in reverse types. We solved this problem in following manner:
Images were modified in such a manner that total ink coverage was reduced to the range
230% to 260% without making the visible difference.
Trapping was applied very carefully and in a manner where trap border was thicker in lateral direction than in circumferential one.
While imposing the pages, two forms on a sheet were chosen in such a manner that total ink coverage of the sheet did not become too heavy. One heavy coverage form was paired with a relatively light coverage form.

On page 207, a whole passage of text is printed in very small type (0.70 point in 70% black). With the help of a reasonable loupe you can read the whole text by Donna Haraway starting from “The house, Santa Cruz...” to “...as important as irony”
